Born in the Algarve, João Vieira changed to Rio Maior, along with his parents and his twin brother (also a race walker Sergio Vieira), with only two years old. Both started by running tests and soon were invited to join to a club in Rio Maior. Today João Vieira and his wife Vera Santos, are in Sporting CP.

In the curriculum of John Vieira there is the shine two bronze medals in Athletics European Championships. The first in Gothenburg (2006) and the second in Barcelona (2010).
