RIO MAIOR RACE WALKING GRAND PRIX

Qieyang Shenjie of China and Colombia's Eider Arevalo produced convincing 20km victories at the 28th Race Walking World Cup in Rio Maior on Saturday (6), the fourth stop of the 2019 IAAF Race Walking Challenge.

Qieyang, the 2012 Olympic 20 km silver medallist, dominated the women's competition, clocking 1:29:00 to triumph at this race for the third time after victories in 2016 and 2018.

Inna Kashyna of Ukraine, the 2017 World University Games winner, produced the day's biggest surprise. The 27-year-old broke away from the chase pack in the middle stages of the race en route to a 1:29:30 runner-up finish, another 30 seconds clear of Colombian Sandra Arenas, who finished third.

Spaniards Raquel Gonzalez and Laura Garcia-Caro rounded out the top five, clocking 1:30:17 and 1:30:33, respectively.

Portugal's race walker Ana Cabecinha, a consistent top-eight finisher at recent global championships, finished eighth with a back injury, clearly in pain after crossing the finish line. World and European 50 km champion Inês Henriques, a hometown Rio Maior heroine, stopped her race twice but eventually bounced back to reach the finish in tears, clocking 1:38:16 for 12th.

In the men’s race, Eider Arevalo, the 2017 world champion over the distance, clocked 1:21:15 to secure his third Rio Maior victory as well, after wins in 2015 and 2017. But the 27-year-old didn't move to the front until the final lap, eventually breaking free from a pack of ten with a 3:42 final kilometre. Spain's Diego Garcia, last year's winner, was second in 1:21:26.

Japan's Eiki Takahashi, this year's national champion, was third in 1:21:40, four seconds clear of Brazil's Caio Bonfim.
